Hobonichi 5-year Notebook: 5 Reasons to Give it a Go

Hobonichi 5-year notebook

My encounter with Hobonichi 5-year notebook is like a tale of love at first sight. I don’t know, but I just had this feeling that I’ll like this notebook A LOT.

Good thing, I was right about it.

5 reasons why I love and recommend that you give Hobonichi 5-year notebook a try

Admittedly, my Hobonichi 5-year notebook is the priciest notebook I’ve ever bought due to my journaling enthusiasm. Some might think that this is a little extravagant. Yet, I totally understand and respect their opinion.

But then, the practical side of me tells that I should buy something that I could use for a longer period of time. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise why I bought this 5-year notebook.

Apart from longevity, I have other reasons why I love Hobonichi 5-year planner. Here they are:

Hobonichi 5-year notebook gives you an organized and compact way of memory keeping.

This 5-year notebook has each of its pages dedicated to a certain date of each month. Hence, there is a separate page for January 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on.

Then, each of such pages is sectioned into 5 parts.  Each part corresponds to the year covered by the 5-year planner. With mine, they are 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

It looks like this:

Because of this set up, I can see at a glance what I had done or been up to on a specific day of a particular year. I’m pretty sure this is something I cannot do in an ordinary notebook or journal.

If you’re someone who would like this degree of organization in their planning or memory keeping, then, this Hobonichi notebook is something you should consider.

You can doodle, sketch, or paint on it.

The Hobonichi 5-year notebook uses Tomoe River paper. Although this paper is lightweight for having been used primarily for catalog mailings, it is actually known to withstand anything. (Nonetheless, please note that there can be minimal ghosting with  fountain pen inks, but that’s normal since this paper is thin to start with.)

So, if you’re into fountain pen writing and watercolor artworks, you’ll enjoy using this notebook as sketchbook, just like this:

Meanwhile, be informed that this notebook doesn’t work well with Sharpees and similar writing materials. Vlogger Mark from Men Who Bullet actually demonstrated and cautioned his subscribers on this matter.

You can plan and journal at the same time.

Hobonichi 5-year notebook has blank pages, which can be used for virtually anything.

You can put stickers or thermal prints, or have it doodled or painted on. In a way, this gives you an opportunity to do the things you would normally do in your typical journal notebook.

Indeed, it’s like having a planner and bujo in one notebook.

It lays flat on surface even if it’s not a spiral notebook.

I’m not sure if this is just me, but I hate it when the notebook doesn’t lay on a 180-degree angle, flat on a table or surface. A notebook that can’t lay flat on a surface seriously hassles me a lot.

There really is no rocket science explanation for this. This is just mere preference and convenience for me. And if you’re someone like me, you will completely understand.

You get to experience good quality and exquisitely made notebook for planning or journaling.

For sure, you wouldn’t want to miss on something well-made. It is not only aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, it is economic too. You know it will last you longer than your usual bookstore notebook. Plus, it’s a timeless piece you can add to your stationary collection.

Hobonichi 5-year notebook is worth it

Overall, my experience using this notebook is both satisfying and rewarding. It’s as if I found some “planning and journaling peace” with it.

I hope my experience helped you, in a way or two, in firming up your decision on whether to get this 5-year notebook or not. At any rate, I wish you all the best not just on searching for the right planner and journal for you, but in your life in the years to come.

Happy 2021!
